File Type Settings Overview

The type of a file is generally determined by the system using the filename extension. One file type may encompass multiple file extensions: for instance both the .jpg extension and .jpeg extensions belong to the JPEG image file type.

To change the settings for a given file type, you must first add the file type to Magic Launch. The file types you add appear on the left column of the Magic Launch preference pane. By selecting one or more file types, you can inspect their settings on the right side of the panel.

For each file type added to Magic Launch, you can change the following:

Select the default application to be used when opening all files of this type when not opened using their creator application or custom rules.

Choose to launch the creator application to make Magic Launch look for an application matching the creator code of the given file. If the creator application can be launched, it is used to open the file.

Create custom rules and refine further the choice of the application to launch by inspecting various characteristics of the file to open. You can have many rules active at once, each defining the criteria to determining if the file should be open by a particular application.
