SmallImage

SmallImage is a simple and efficient tool to batch process JPEG files, resize them, recompress them, remove embedded profiles and make them ready for the web or store them efficiently.

SmallImage also lets you retreive informations about your JPEG files such as the EXIF informations, and so on.

Usage

The main window look like this:

You can drop JPEG files or directories containing JPEG files in the "Filename" list. Choose the options you desire in the lower part of the window and click "Process Files" to generate the new JPEG files.

All options are available on the main window, making them easy to use. They are divided into several boxes:

Remove profiles:

You can select which profiles you want to remove from your files:

Icon

These options let you decide how to treat the icon file associated with your image. Several applications create a thumbnail of your image to use as an icon. This icon can take several kB on your hard-drive. You can either keep the icon if it exists, remove it, or add it (if it doesn't exist).

Recompress

If you only want to remove the profiles and to alter the icon of your files, no recompression will be necessary but if you want to make your files smaller (for example to publish them on your website or to send then in an email) you can choose to recompress them. My advice would be to recompress your images at a quality no higher than 75 if you intend to use them on the internet. For thumbnails you can go even lower than this value. As a rule of thumb I would advise you not to use values above 85 in any case, but this is just the way I work, other people might disagree with this (and they would probably be right).

The best quality is at 100 and the lowest is at 0.

SmallImage does not need a recompression to remove the profiles, which means that you can do this without any loss of quality.

Scaling

This box lets you decide whether you want to scale your image. Be aware that scaling your image implies a recompression of your image and therefore a loss of quality (a good choice of the quality value can lead to a reasonable loss of quality). There are two types of scaling, relative and fixed:

Suffix and Path

Here you can decide to add a suffix to the processed files. You can also decide where the processed file will be saved. The default behaviour is to save the processed file in the same directory as the original image but to append the "-small" suffix. If a processed image should replace an existing file, you will be warned and asked for confirmation:

Presets

If you want to keep a set of options for a later use, you can save it as a preset using the preset menu on the lower right part of the window. This allows for a quick access to several sets of options depeding on what type of files you want to generate. For exemple you can have two sets of options for the web: one that will simply strip the profiles and remove the icon, and the opther one that will scale the image to create a thumbnail.

Informations

In addition to processing your images, SmallImage also lets you retrieve informations about them like the EXIF informations for example. To do so, select a file and open the informations panel by clicking on the "Infos" toolbar button:

Preferences

The preferences window is a very simple one:

You have basically two options that are quite explicit. You can decide if you want to clear the list of files after a sucessful process. You can also decide how to treat a file that is dropped on the application icon, it will either be added to the list or processed immediately with the current set of options.

Managing presets

On the preference window, you will also find a button that will open the presets manager:

Here you can delete and rename the presets you saved on the main window.

Requirements

SmallImage requires MacOS X 10.6 or later.
